Lunchroom complaints

The News-Banner was contacted by multiple parents and individuals last week regarding what they described as a lack of food for students. On the first day of school, students at the high school were fed an Uncrustable (PB&J sandwich), potato chips, an applesauce cup, Rice Krispy treat and given a veggie juice box. As a father of two rather large boys, I know they would have probably considered this more a visit to the pantry instead of a meal.

By Wednesday, social media was abuzz with complaints about the food being provided. I think Wednesday’s meal was a prepackaged grilled cheese sandwich, with much of the same chips, fruit or vegetable, cookies and juice.

We spoke with Superintendent Dr. Scarlett Copeland about the complaints. Dr. Copeland told the newspaper they are already working with principals to provide more hot meals for students attending school in person. She explained that COVID-19 has understandably created some challenges for the school system, and they are working as quickly as possible to correct these issues. Dr. Copeland also stated that each school is a little different. As an example, students at the elementary school may be served...

Murphy Gooddog and friends have a lot they can teach us

You longtime loyalists (and you know who you are) will remember the exploits of Sheila the Family Wonderdog in this space. You will also recall that Shelia went to Doggie Heaven a few years back where she now enjoys swapping yarns with her pals Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and Old Yeller and chasing squirrels into eternity.

Sheila was, in fact, my grand dog, which meant I petted her and provided her with dog biscuits but left trips to the vet and poop-scooping to her rightful owners, my son’s family.

I still miss Sheila but I am happy to announce that there is a new grand dog in my life these days. His name is Murphy. Actually, his full name is Murphy Gooddog. Like Sheila the Family Wonderdog before him, Murphy Gooddog is of uncertain parentage which means he is not likely to get a shot at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. I don’t think they have a category called “Plain Ol’ Dogs.”

You may be wondering how Murphy Gooddog got his name. As I watched my daughter training him on the do’s and don’t’s of acceptable canine etiquette, she would say “Murphy Gooddog” whenever he succeeded, which was quite often. A strange name, I will admit, but it beats Scooby-Doo or Toto.

When the pandemic hit, Murphy Gooddog was in the process of becoming a certified therapy dog. That is quite an accomplishment for a plain ol’ dog. Therapy dogs live at home with their owner but after rigorous, in-depth training, they then are able to go into places like retirement or nursing homes, schools, hospitals, mental institutions and hospices and do what dogs do best - give comfort and love to people who need it.

I have been around Murphy Gooddog enough to know firsthand that he will be an excellent therapy dog if and when training resumes. He has been practicing his skills on me. No matter how blue my funk when he arrives, seeing his happy face improves my attitude instantly.

The late Jasper Dorsey, who was vice president of Southern Bell’s operations in Georgia, was both my boss and my mentor. He taught me a lot about the business world but he taught me even more about life. One of his observations was that to get along with people effectively, it was not necessary to read books like Dale Carnegie’s self-help book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People” as good as it may be. Just act like a dog.

Unlike people, dogs don’t judge us based on the color of our skin, our financial status, our social standing, our sexual orientation, our political affiliation, our religious beliefs (or lack thereof), our education, whether our ancestors fought on one side or the other in the Civil War or anything else. They accept us for who we are.

If we screw up and embarrass ourselves or others or totally fail at whatever we do, that’s okay with them. They don’t hold it against us and continually harp on our human frailties. They love us in spite of ourselves.

The best thing about a dog, Mr. Dorsey used to say, is that they are loyal to a fault, whether we deserve it or not. Dogs are not fair-weather friends. They are with us in the good times and the not-so-good.

Before you feel the need to remind me: Yes, there are a few dogs that give their fellow Canis lupus familiaris a bad rap. They bite people or bark too much or chase cars. It’s not their fault. That is because, like bratty children, they were raised that way by us humans.

Speaking of humans, I hear people saying that with all the violence and protests and statue-razing and social media ranting occurring these days that we going to the dogs, suggesting our society is headed downhill. One theory for that idiom is that in earlier times rotten food not fit for human consumption was thrown to the dogs.

Maybe it is time we redefine that phrase and say that it would be beneficial if this country really was going to the dogs. Let’s face it. We humans haven’t been doing such a hot job these days. Maybe we need to act more like dogs.

In the meantime, while Murphy Gooddog awaits clearance to get back to training as a certified therapy dog, I will let him continue to practice on making me a kinder and gentler person. He has a lot he can teach me.

The oldies

The brain is an amazing organ. It might not let me remember your name when I meet you downtown, but it frequently presents a parade of memories for no logical reason. Some are entertaining; others, not so much. I never know what will spur any given memory.

One recent Saturday, Larry and I made a trip to Macon and back. I drove; Larry slept. I set the radio to an oldies station and cruised on down the highway. After we turned onto Interstate 16, I cruised a bit faster.

“Hang on, Sloopy, Sloopy, hang on . . .” blared through my speakers and put me right back in the kitchen where I served as dishwasher for about a hundred years. I saw my teenaged self dancing all around that old-fashioned kitchen, popping a dishrag in time to that song. Only the ringing of the black wall phone pulled my attention away from my music. I’d turn the music down just enough to hear...

J. E. Blanton, 85, of Surrency passed away Monday, August 24, 2020 at Appling Healthcare System.

Bro. Blanton was born August 16, 1935 in Surrency to the late Stephen M. “Steve” Blanton and the late Elizabeth Herndon Blanton.

Bro. Blanton trusted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior on August 16, 1952 and went on to serve in the ministry for 66 years. His love for people and his love for Jesus motivated him to strive to be a dedicated and passionate soul-winner and pastor. He pastored Oakland Free Will Baptist Church in Whites Creek, TN while attending the Free Will Baptist College in Nashville, TN. After graduating from college, he returned to Southeast Georgia where he started four churches, including Jesup First Free Will Baptist Church. In 1968, Bro. Blanton moved to Atlanta, where he started Decatur Free Will Baptist Church and Snellville Free Will Baptist Church.

In 1996, Bro. Blanton returned home to Surrency to retire. After filling in at various churches, he cut his retirement short when God called him to reenter the pastorate ministry and to serve Riverside Baptist Church and later Zoar Baptist Church, both in Appling County. In May 2019, Bro. Blanton retired from preaching the gospel, but he continued to minister and encourage everyone he saw and everyone he could talk to on the phone.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Jean Knight Blanton of Surrency; daughter, Deborah Blanton of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Shannon Blanton of Spartanburg, SC; sisters, Kathleen Overstreet of Surrency and Naomi McQuaig of Alma; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Linda Blanton of Surrency; and grandchildren, Daniel Miltenberger of Jacksonville, FL, Chloe Miltenberger of Tampa, FL, and Colt Blanton of Spartanburg, SC. September 12, 1923 – August 23, 2020

“And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with the people.”  I Samuel 2:26

Samuel “Buddy” Cain, 96, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, August 23, 2020, after a brief illness. Mr. Cain, a native of Appling County, was the fourth of six children born to Versie Crosby Cain and William Ballard Cain on a small farm bordering Little Satilla Creek in southwestern Appling County and northern Bacon County. He was a veteran of World War II, having been drafted just weeks after his graduation from Baxley High School in 1942.  He returned home when the war ended, forever changed by his experience. He soon met and married the love of his life, Berna Deen Graham of Jeff Davis County. He worked as a woods rider for his uncle in Denton for several years before he learned of a farm for sale in the Fourth District community of Appling County.  Buddy and Deen were able to purchase the farm, where they then lived for the rest of their lives. They were already settled there when their twin sons Wendel and Wade were born near the end of 1951. Although they resided many miles across the county, the Cains remained faithful members of Zoar Methodist Church, which Mr. Cain had joined as a young man. He was able to attend services there regularly for over 90 years. For many years they attended Sunday dinners and fellowshipped with other members of the Cain family after attending church. Buddy and Deen had been married for 52 years when she passed away in 1998.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Cain was pre-deceased by a son, Wendel Cain; granddaughter Faith Cain; siblings George, Barney, and Buck Cain and Corinne Garrett.  He is survived by a son, Wade Cain of Rincon; granddaughters Julie (Brad) Carter of Baxley, and Rebecca (Jared) Peterson of Phenix City, Alabama; great-granddaughters Karlee Lastinger of Baxley and Farah Peterson of Phenix City; great-grandson Chase Stone; two great-great-grandchildren, Ryker and Kamree of Baxley; sister Evelyn Haymons of Ellenwood and a sister-in-law, Betty Cain of Hazlehurst. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Insurances and warranties are designed expressly to provide peace of mind in the event of the inevitable; an appliance or system breakdown. Much like auto insurers provide coverage for automobiles, there are a number of entities that structure what’s known as home warranties. Such plans specify they provide coverage for everything related to your residence to include, major appliances, plumbing, electrical, and options to include the roof. This sounds like the ideal arrangement as everything man made will invariably need repair or replacement.

To know your home is covered by insurance as well as a warranty brings a level of comfort, making it possible to better enjoy life. At least, that’s the perceived result which is reason enough to convince many homeowners to purchase available coverage plans. Companies solicit perspective customers by purporting an unfaltering commitment to satisfaction as the focus. Such was the case when Choice Home Warranty courted us thirty-four months ago. We were even “awarded” the courtesy of an additional...

Remember the Tina Turner hit, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” In the lyrics, love is referred to as a “second-hand emotion.” That song popped into my head as I watch what is happening to our country.

Love has got a lot to do with it and, unfortunately, it seems to be a second-hand emotion these days — second to a lot of hate. We see that hate on television, hear about it on the radio, read about it in the newspaper and watch as hate is fanned with irresponsible social media postings.

Hate seems to have gotten its impetus from well-publicized examples of highly questionable police tactics and spread into something approaching anarchy in cities across the nation. Some people are demanding law enforcement agencies be defunded. Others wonder how we can stop the rioting and looting without the police.

Kneeling at the playing of our national anthem is seen as a heroic gesture by some and patently disrespectful by others. We hear that Black lives matter — and they do — but many whites perceive that statement as a wholesale indictment of all white people who, in turn, wonder why no one brings up the killing fields in places like Chicago, where Blacks are killing other Blacks in alarming numbers.

Yet, many white people don’t seem to understand or appreciate the inherent frustration of Blacks. I can’t imagine how I would feel today had I grown up watching parents that I loved dearly having to sit in the back of the bus, be denied service in a restaurant because of the color of their skin, serving their country in war and yet being prohibited from voting when they returned. Many would say we are long past those days; others would say we have a long way to go.

As for this day, we seem to be at an impasse in race relations in this country. We aren’t talking to each other. We are yelling. It is only going to get worse as election time nears and politicians pander to their supporters on either side of the racial divide.

What is keeping us from reaching out to each other? Arnie Sidman, former senior vice president at RJR Nabisco and an Atlanta tax attorney is author of “From Race to Renewal: It’s Not All Black & White.” In a recent opinion piece in the Atlanta newspapers, he says, “Any plan to improve race relations between Black Americans and white Americans must be voluntarily implemented outside the political realm” and that “the initial goal should simply be making Blacks and whites more comfortable with one another in a social setting.” If we get to know each other up-close-and-personal, we might find out we have more in common than we realize.

Sidman suggests that white churches and black churches pair up with an agreed-upon minimum number of congregational pairs that could meet and “discuss family stories and items of mutual interest or concern in a less threatening and confrontational medium than protest marches.”

I could not agree more. My Christian faith espouses that we love everyone. So, why don’t we?

The answer is that churches — Black and white — are composed of human beings who bring their prejudices in on Sunday, hear a rip-roaring sermon about turning the other cheek, walking the extra mile, getting the mote out of our own eye and then revert back to business as usual on Monday. Sadly, I speak from experience. My own.

If our houses of worship aren’t willing to make the effort, who can?

I believe racism is a learned behavior. I have told the story previously of our Birthday Bash last November where great-grandson Cameron Charles Yarbrough and I celebrate our respective birthdays with family and friends.

As everyone was preparing to leave, 5-year-old Hayden and 4-year-old Kayden gave each other a big hug. Hayden is my great-granddaughter. She is white. Kayden is the grandson of Carla, who has been an important part of our family for the past year. Kayden is Black. Obviously, neither of them seemed aware of their differences and just as obviously, didn’t care.

Over the coming years, will they learn to hate and distrust each other? If so, our society is going to have to teach them that. I pray that they and their generation will find a better way to deal with their disagreements than what I am seeing today. We can’t continue down this path of self-destruction and survive. What’s love got to do with it? Everything.

Very blessed

I am a blessed individual. God watched over my family tremendously in August. I am happy to report we have officially survived COVID-19.

On Saturday, August 1, I began to have symptoms late in the evening hours. By the next day my joints and muscles felt like I had the flu or either I worked too hard the day before installing a sign and working in yards. Later that day the low-grade fever began. The aches and fever continued until Wednesday morning.

On Monday I went ahead and contacted a doctor, and I told my provider that I wanted to immediately start hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin and zinc. My son Cole and I went to the doctor’s office and received the test. The next day Amy and Jacob went. The test was not a pleasant experience, but the nurses did a wonderful job.

Three positives and one negative were the results. Cole, Jake and I were positive; Amy was negative. It was an interesting few days around the Gardner household trying to quarantine within our own household and trying our best to stay away from Amy. For the most part, the boys and I lived on one end of the house and Amy lived in the other. We do feel that Amy...

The new normal

“It’s the new normal,” people say on television, the radio, and in seemingly every conversation I hear or engage in. “The old normal is gone with the wind and will never come back again in this lifetime. Mark my words. COVID-19 came along and brought us this normal, whether we like it or not.”

Well, as for me, I don’t like it—not one jot or tilde. The year 2020 has lasted about a lifetime so far, and it’s barely September. I’m ready for a vaccine for this horrendous virus, which I’ve already suffered through, but they tell me I could get it again. Nobody knows for sure. They say it could mutate into some other monster, but they don’t know. I’ve noticed that THEY don’t know much about COVID-19. I, however, know for certain that I don’t want it again.

I love my husband and my dogs, but I’ve spent an inordinate number of hours with them this year. Larry and I have discussed every subject known to man about four or five times and are close to solving the world’s problems, except COVID-19, that is. No ideas there. The dogs have become accustomed to having us home all the time; if I start to leave, they gather around me with those big worried eyes that ask, “You’re not really leaving us, are you?”

I don’t want to wear...

By Noah Gardner

The Baxley City Council held its meeting August 26 at 8:30 a.m. Mayor Tim Varnadore called the meeting to order and Reverend Rick Brown gave the invocation. Councilwoman Betty Livingston was excused due to her being in the hospital recovering from hip injuries.

At the meeting the mayor proposed a proclamation recognizing James. L. Godfrey’s 44 years of service with the Baxley Police Department. The proclamation stated that he had started his career at the age of 21 as a dispatcher and climbed through the ranks to become Chief in 1988. Since then Godfrey has been credited with numerous achievements and completed over 2,000 hours of police training. He has written many grants and has received numerous awards and honors. One such honor was being invited to the White House Rose Garden for special recognition by President Clinton in connection with a federal war on crime grant he wrote and received on behalf of the city. The chief has worked hard to ensure the continuous progress of the police department’s growth and advancements. He has solved many crimes and worked with the Sheriff’s Office to better the relationship between city and county. He has worked with five mayors, five city managers, five sheriff’s and 18 city council members. Godfrey holds the distinction of being one of the longest serving police chiefs in the state of Georgia.

Police Chief Godfrey retired effective August 31, 2020 and passes the position of police chief to Jeffery Taylor. A motion to accept the proclamation was made by Mayor Pro Tem Mickey Bass, seconded by Councilwoman Santina Fryer, and passed unanimously. The plaque with the resolution was presented to Godfrey. The mayor opened the floor to the public for comments. Multiple people spoke...
